'Downstairs Room' Shoot

The long edit for The Downstairs Room begins in Yah-Wan McLelland's brand new loft based edit and sound design set up.

Ahead of the field

Have been keeping relatively quiet about this but I have been directing the video content for a massive 'making of' for Ben Wheatley's latest Opus Magnus "A Field In England".

It's super detailed, super spoilertastic (watch the movie first for Gawd's sake) and in various parts. I'll post my faves here but here's the compendium version:

The only document more important than the script: the schedule!

Ruff drafts.

Camera boxes in the bathroom; lights in the kitchen; inaccessible bedrooms full of art dept stuff; production office in the kitchen; family bags of crisps and comically outsized cafetierres;
angry flatmates; frightened cats...

It can mean only one thing: filming for The Downstairs Room is about to begin in Lord Tunley mansions.

Sugarman

Stuff gradually arriving for the next short while we do tests.

Another one off the bucket list: a shot with a sugar glass prop.

We have enough plates of the stuff to film a John Woo film.

Without any sound these camera tests for our next short, The Downstairs Room, look like a Maya Deren film made by drunks.

If anyone actually read this blog I'd set a competition where you have to provide a soundtrack to the images.

Some interesting stuff amid the randomness: those mega close ups of spoons and eyes are filmed with a home made macro lens, basically a magnifying glass in front of a 50mm lens...

The "A Field In England" official website has just gone up. I directed the behind the scenes "masterclass". Getting excited about this, can't go wrong with a Mr and Mrs Wheatley joint.

Recording Foley with air vibration magus extraordinaire Yah-Wan McLelland and Tom Meeten doing some exemplary voice over work for "The Baron".

Spoons rammed into porridge oats for footsteps on loose grit and dirt; flapping gloves for a bird in flight; bending the ring binder spine of a notebook for a creaking lamp handle. It's all here I tells ya. It's like Berberian Sound Studio except we're all still sane. Isn't that right Mr Hurble Wurble?
