Attack of the Seven Foot Eyeless Gerbil

God this 3D animation lark really is misery cubed. Check out this tale of woe.

Design Rough Set: check!
Design Gerbil: check!
Put Gerbil into Rough set: che-arghh! WTF!

The Gerbil is now about 7 foot high and has NO EYES!

What gives? And why is there no "make Gerbil normal" button on my 3D programme?

Feeling Rough

Turns out animation is quite a long winded process. Who knew?

Today: a rough set for the (thankfully) only interior for Giant Robot vs Gerbil

These sets serve only as placeholders while the characters are rigged and animated to provide reference points for scale and other importahhh- oh god, I'm boring myself.

That shot that made everything look diddy reminded me of the Perky Pat models in Philip K Dick's Three Stigmata Of Palmer Eldritch.

Jus' sayin'.

Character rigging and rough soundtrack next. Onwards...

From The Vaults

Another blast from the past now, it's the first animation I ever did! You have been warned.

This is 'Dog and Log', a little cartoon I did for my nieces a good few Xmas's back. Altogether now: "Ahhhhhhh". It has to be said, they were massively underwhelmed...

The voice is of course the inimitable Alex Kirk.

I Wobot

More adventures in 3D land. This is the titular robot for Giant Robot vs Gerbil.

Rough sketch...

Just add a few hours of Geeky Spoddery...

And he's DONE!

He stubbornly refused to become totally freakin awesome but he's mine...

Over to Vimeo for a quick vid:

New Animation!

This is done. At last. Hope you like it.

Over to my shiny brand new Vimeo account to show you this...

Giant Robot vs Gerbil Animatic Jan 2010 from Gareth Tunley on Vimeo.

It may look like a disturbed four year old has got his hands on a computer and a bag of coffee but it is in fact the animatic for "Giant Robot vs Gerbil" a new animation I'm doing as part of my ongoing quest to teach myself 3D which judging by my efforts so far may be the death of me.

Blender Bloke

Those of you not interested in 3D Modelling and computer animation need read no further.

Hello... hello...?

Helped along by this tutorial from some dude in Oklahoma with way too much time on his hands I have made this freaky looking fucker:

He doesn't look too bad from a distance which means he'd be fine as an extra. Standing behind a box. And a lot of smoke. Dressed in dark colours in a dim light.

Torso not tooooo shabby:

He's also helped by the funky matrix style lines all over him, but take a closer look...

Warghhh! Jesus God! what is that?... looks like he's escaped from a burns unit or some Roswell style experimental facility. Maybe that's why he's frowning so much, it certainly wasn't intentional on my part.

I will soldier on, putting some colour, hair and clothes on him and try and make him move about but I fear there may be no saving the poor sap. Still it's an improvement on this from just after Xmas...

Excuses, Excuses

The present animation limps to completion. This 'car' is the latest addition. This will only whizz past in the foreground all blurry like but even so it's pretty shonky even by my standards. Thing is, things like this...

...and the attendant bottles of booze keep getting in the way of doing a better job. Ah well... almost there...

Extrude Damn You

This deformed monstrosity is my first excursion into the arcane world of 3D:

Of which more later. Wish me luck...

Fly my pretty...

Endeavoring to animate this thing...

Nearly There...

The whole animation is only going to be one shot and, hopefully, under 30 seconds long but Xmas keeps getting in the way of doing owt. Still, made this bus stop sign tonight. Big whoopee...

Thursday, 24 December 2009

er... you wait for one bus... etc...

A granny for the same animation. She's holding her hand like that 'cos she's going to be walking a dog. Now to make the old biddy move...

Merry Xmas

Cheery character from another animation I'm working on. Plan is to finish it over Xmas...

Move Damn You...

A short animation I just completed the other day. It makes use of the pioneering new animation technique known as the "That'll Have To Do Process". Even so, it's satisfying to see stuff move at your command...
